Here comes the festival special kheer recipe kadalai paruppu payasam or chana dal payasam. (also known as senaga pappu payasam). This is a very delicious and quick to prepare kheer recipe. Its perfect for festive moments like navratri, krishna jayanthi, vinayagar chaturthi, tamil new year, etc. Its prepared with coconut milk, jaggery, chana dal along with rich aroma of ghee, cardamom and coconut.

Yield - 4 servings

Ingredients

Chana dal (kadalai paruppu) - 1 cup

Ghee - 2 tbsp

Cashew nuts - 8

Coconut pieces - 2 tbsp

Cardamom pwd - 1/4 tsp

Thick coconut milk - 1 cup

Jaggery - 300 g

Instructions

1.

Heat 2 tbsp of ghee in fry pan.

2.

Add cashewnuts and sliced coconut pieces and roast.

3.

Roast until golden. Take it aside.

4.

Grate coconut to fine pieces.

5.

Add to blender and add 1/2 cup of water.

6.

Grind to smooth paste.

7.

Strain thick coconut milk out of it.

Set it aside.

Heat a dry pan.

Add chana dal and roast for few minutes in low flame.

Turn off flame.

12.

Add water and wash the chana dal.

13.

Add chana dal to pressure cooker and add 1 cup of water.

14.

Pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles or until soft.

15.

Once the pressure goes off, open the lid and take the cooked chana dal.

Add to blender (leaving behind few chana dal) and grind to smooth paste.

17.

Add chana dal paste to the pan.

18.

Heat with stirring.

19.

Add thick jaggery water and mix.

20.

Add elaichi powder and stir.

21.

Add thick coconut milk and allow to boil.

22.

Once it starts boiling, turn off flame.

23.

Add roasted cashewnuts and coconut bits.

That's it ...flavorful healthy delicious chana dal payasam is ready.

Enjoy warm or chilled.
