In this video recipe, you can learn today how to make traditional healthy delicious milagu rasam (pepper rasam) at home. It is quite famous in South Indian cuisine because of its medicinal value. It makes an excellent soup during the winters and it serves as a great remedy for cold, sore throat, cough, indigestion etc. I make it very frequently in my kitchen as it tastes divine with hot steamed rice and a tsp of ghee. Try this spicy, tangy hot rasam at your home & tickle your taste buds!

Ingredients

Tamarind - small piece

Oil or ghee - 1 tbsp

Pepper - 1 tsp

Cumin - 1 tsp

Garlic - 4 to 5 pods

Red chilli - 1

Tomato - 1

Turmeric pwd - 1/4 tsp

Hing / asafoetida pwd - a pinch

Mustard - 1/4 tsp

Cumin - 1/2 tsp

Split urad dal - 1/2 tsp

Red chilli (optional) - 1

Curry leaves - a few

Fresh coriander leaves

Salt to taste

Instructions

1.

Wash and soak a small ball of tamarind in 1 cup of water.

2.

Allow to soak for 10 mins and extract thick tamarind juice out of it.

3.

In a blender, add pepper, cumin, garlic, red chilli, sliced tomato and grind to coarse paste.

4.

Add this to mixing bowl, add tamarind juice and 2 to 3 cups of water.

5.

Add turmeric pwd, hing and salt.

6.

Add coriander leaves and boil in medium flame.

7.

Meanwhile lets do the seasoning of spices.

8.

Heat 2 tsp of ghee or oil in small frypan.

9.

Add mustard, cumin, split urad dal, red chilli, curry leaves and allow to splutter.

10.

Turn off flame.

11.

Once the rasam starts boiling,(as shown in video) turn off flame.

12.

Add the seasoning to the rasam.

13.

Garnish with more freshly chopped coriander leaves.

14.

Serve hot with steamed white rice or as soup ( it serves as an excellent remedy for cough, cold and indigestion)
