Curd Rice

This true comfor food is very popular that is served with a south Indian thali or meal. It is prepared with steamed rice and plain curd with an additional tempering of flavorful spices for added taste. It makes a perfect packed dish for travel or lunch box.   • Rice - 1 cup
  • Yoghurt - 2 cup
  • Milk - 1 cup
  • Oil - 1 tsp
  • Mustard - 1/4 tsp
  • Cumin - 1/2 tsp
  • Split urad dal - 1/2 tsp
  • Cashew - 4 to 5
  • Green chilli - 1
  • Grated ginger - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Hing / asafoetida pwd - a pinch
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves


  1. Wash and soak rice in water for 5 mins.
  2. Drain water and add to bowl.
  3. Add 3 cups of water and pressure cook until the rice is cooked soft.
  4. Once the pressure turns off, mash the rice well.
  5. Add salt, 1/2 cup of water, yoghurt, milk and mix.

To Temper

  1. Heat 2 tsp of oil in small frypan.
  2. Add mustard, cumin, split urad dal, cashew, sliced green chilli, grated ginger, curry leaves and saute.
  3. Wait until crackles.
  4. Add hing and turn off flame.
  5. Add the seasoning to the curd rice and mix.
  6. Garnish with freshly sliced coriander leaves, pomegranate seeds, grapes, grated carrot, mango etc.
  7. Flavorful delicious south Indian style curd rice is ready.
