Hi Friends ….Hope you had a wonderful karthigai deepam celebration yesterday too. Today, I am going to share with you the traditional Unni Appam / Nei Appam recipe. Usually we make this tasty dumplings for prasadam. This irresistibly sweet, deep fried, golden brown colored balls are very famous snack of South India and is prepared from rice, jaggery, banana and ghee. Here I have made use of wheat flour. This simple Unniyappam recipe makes it very easy to prepare this delicious snack. Here we go for the crispy and tasty Ghee Appam recipe..:)

Ingredients

Wheat flour - 1 ½ cup

Maida flour - 1 ½ cup

Rice flour - 2 tbsp

Grated coconut - ¾ cup

Cardamom pwd - a generous pinch

Ripe banana - 1

Ghee - 1 tbsp

Baking pwd - a pinch

Jaggery - 200 g

Oil / ghee to fry

Instructions

1.

In a mixing bowl, add wheat flour, maida flour, rice flour, grated coconut, cardamom pwd, ghee and baking pwd.

2.

Peel and chop banana to slices and add it to the bowl.

3.

Mash the banana and mix all the ingredients well.

4.

Add jaggery to the pan, add water and heat it.

5.

Continue stirring, until jaggery dissolves.

6.

Turn off flame, once the jaggery melts completely and turns into thick syrup.

7.

Filter it with stainer and add the jaggery syrup to the bowl.

Mix well.

9.

Add enough water to make the batter of consistency as shown in the below pic.

Clean and keep ready the non- stick Unni appam pan ( also called as appam / paniyaram maker ).

Heat it on medium flame.

12.

Grease the holes generously with oil or ghee.

13.

When the pan reaches moderate heat, spoon in the batter into the holes.

14.

Deep fry on a low medium flame.

15.

Flip it over and fry till they turn golden brown in colour and crisp.

16.

Drain and remove from the pan.

17.

Repeat the same with the remaining batter to make tasty Unni Appams.

Crispy and delicious Unniappams are ready.
